Ingredients

  • 8 cups day-old bread, cubed (Challah or French bread recommended)
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into uniform one-inch cubes and place them into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently with a spoon to ensure the bread is fully submerged.
  5. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the pudding.
  6. Let the mixture stand for 10-15 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving warm.
